The brown eared pheasant is a large terrestrial pheasant native to China, with ADW also describing its range as including Mongolia and Tibet. It inhabits mountain slopes and high plateaus at elevations of about 1,100–2,600 metres. Its preferred habitat is temperate mixed coniferous and deciduous forest with a well-developed shrub understory. Adults can reach one metre in total length, much of it formed by the long tail. Males weigh 1.65–2.475 kg and females 1.45–2.025 kg. (Animal Diversity Web)
Birds forage on the ground for seeds, leaves, insects, and other vegetation and dig around grass clumps for roots, bulbs, and tubers. Some pairs maintain permanent monogamous bonds. Spring courtship includes loud territorial calls, food presentation by the male, enlarged wattles, drooped wings, and a fanned tail. Breeding occurs from April through June. A typical clutch contains five to eight eggs, although ADW records a broader range of four to twenty-two. The female alone incubates for 26–27 days. (Animal Diversity Web)
