Grey herons range widely across Eurasia and Africa, with the eastern Asian subspecies occurring in the region that includes China. The species is partly migratory, and some individuals travel substantial distances to breeding grounds, although its overall distribution changes relatively little between seasons. Grey herons occupy numerous waterside environments, including marshes, swamps, bogs, estuaries, and riparian habitats. Adults are 84–102 centimetres long, have a wingspan of 155–175 centimetres, and weigh approximately 0.226–1.36 kilograms (Animal Diversity Web).

Fish form the principal food of grey herons, but these adaptable predators also consume insects, crustaceans, frogs, small mammals, and occasionally small birds. At the start of the breeding season, males select nest sites and use low, grating calls to attract females. Pair formation requires acceptance by both birds, and an uninterested male may drive an approaching female away. The sexes look broadly similar, although males tend to be larger. Recorded individuals can live considerably longer than the species' roughly five-year average lifespan (Animal Diversity Web).
