Reeves's muntjac is a small, chestnut-coloured deer standing 43–45cm at the shoulder. Its tail is black above and white below. Adult males carry short antlers and elongated, tusk-like upper canines, which they use when contesting access to females. The species also has unequal hooves, with hairs bordering the smaller hoof and leaving a distinctive track. (Animal Diversity Web)
In China it inhabits subtropical forest at moderate elevations, where it makes paths through dense vegetation. Individuals defend territories, and activity is greatest around dawn and dusk. The diet includes foliage, bark, seeds, fruit and flowers, supplemented by fungi and some animal matter. Breeding occurs throughout the year in the native Chinese range. Its repeated barking is often heard more readily than the animal is seen. (Animal Diversity Web)
