The American pipit is a migratory, insect-eating pipit closely related to the water and European rock pipits. Its breeding habitat is tundra, while outside the breeding season it uses open country with sparse vegetation. Populations winter along North America's Pacific coast and from southern North America into Central America. The species is only a rare vagrant outside its usual range, including western Europe, so any Chinese record should be checked carefully against the intended taxonomic and distributional source.
