Muntiacus truongsonensis
Habitat
Tropical forest and rainforest to at least 1,000m
Range
Annamite Mountains of Vietnam and Laos
Weight
Approximately 15kg
The Annamite muntjac is a small deer of the Annamite Mountains. Hunters have estimated its weight at approximately 15kg. It has brown upperparts, black legs, a bright orange head and white rings above the hooves. Its broad, flattened tail is black above and bears long white hair underneath. Short antlers arise from ridges on the forehead, while both sexes possess similarly sized elongated canine teeth—an unusual feature among muntjacs. (Animal Diversity Web)
The species inhabits tropical forest and rainforest at elevations reaching at least 1,000m in Vietnam and Laos. Available observations characterize it as mainly solitary outside the breeding period, but its home range, reproductive biology and diet remain poorly documented. Although other muntjacs eat varied plant material, that information cannot be transferred safely to this species and is therefore omitted. The opened species accounts did not confirm a wild population in China. (Animal Diversity Web)
