Arborophila rufipectus

Basic stats

Habitat

Thick shrubs near water, mostly gently sloping ground at 1,400–1,800m in the study reserve

Range

China (endemic)

The Sichuan partridge is found only in China, where it is a nationally protected animal. In one reserve study, birds typically occurred between 1,400 and 1,800m, mostly on gently sloping ground close to water, and they prefer thick shrubs for roosting (Wikipedia, general species account).

Males stay away from the females before mating and during incubation, but otherwise roost alongside them. While females brood on the ground, males sit near the ground for two weeks and then leave to roost elsewhere. The breeding season begins in late March and hatching runs from mid-May to mid-July (Wikipedia, general species account).
