The Asiatic toad, also called the Chusan Island toad, is an East Asian species formerly classified as the subspecies Bufo bufo gargarizans. Its Chinese distribution is extensive, reaching provinces from Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia south to Fujian, Jiangxi and Guizhou and west to Qinghai and Sichuan. It also occurs in the Russian Far East and Korea, while an insular subspecies is recognized from Japan's Miyako Islands. (Wikipedia, general species account)

Secretions produced by this toad have a long history in traditional Chinese medicine. A preparation known as chan-su is made from its defensive toxins, and dried skins have also been used in traditional remedies. Modern biochemical study has examined compounds produced by the species; an antimicrobial peptide isolated from Bufo gargarizans was patented in 1998. (Wikipedia, general species account)
