The Assamese macaque is a South and Southeast Asian monkey represented in China by populations occupying limestone forest. A year-long study at Nonggang Nature Reserve found an unusually leaf-heavy diet: young leaves made up 74.1% of feeding records, while fruit contributed 17.4%. Although many plants were eaten, twelve species supplied 85.2% of the recorded diet, and the bamboo Indocalamus calcicolus alone contributed 62%. Researchers connected this dietary pattern with the long season of limited fruit availability in the limestone landscape. (Zhou et al. 2011)
