The eastern grass owl, also known as the Chinese grass owl or Australasian grass owl, is an owl in the barn owl family. Adult males are 32–38cm long and the larger females 35–42cm, with a wingspan of 100–116cm; the female weighs about 460g and the male 400g. It has dark brown or tan upperparts with pale spots, black and tan bars on the wings, a very pale beak, feathered legs and dark brown eyes, and like all Tyto owls a heart-shaped facial disk of brown buff with a white border (Wikipedia, general species account).
It feeds predominantly on small rodents. Its primary call is a harsh, hissing screech or scream like those of other Tyto owls, somewhat louder than the barn owl's (Wikipedia, general species account).
