The bamboo snake or bamboo false cobra (Pseudoxenodon bambusicola) is a colubrid found in southern China, including Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Guizhou, and in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. It lives in wetlands near rocky terrain and moves mostly through leaf litter and low vegetation. (The Reptile Database; Wikipedia, general species account)
It can reach 100 cm, and colour ranges from light brown to grey-purple with black or red bands, plus a black band across the large round eyes. It is active by day, ambushing small prey from hidden positions. Frogs have been recorded as prey, and it probably also takes small lizards, with insects eaten by hatchlings.
