Bambusicola thoracicus
Size
Up to 31cm
The Chinese bamboo partridge is a small gamebird, intermediate in size between the quails and the Perdix partridges, reaching 31cm, with males slightly larger than females. The breast and back are mottled in black, chestnut and cream, with black spots on the flanks. The breast is yellow-ochre, with pale greyish-blue and taupe above the eye and down to the neck. It is one of three bamboo partridge species, along with the mountain bamboo partridge of the Himalayas and the Taiwan bamboo partridge (Wikipedia, general species account).
Like related quails, francolins and junglefowl, males broadcast loud, multi-syllabic calls throughout the day and the year. These serve as challenges to other birds as well as location calls and alarm calls (Wikipedia, general species account).
