The Burmese roofed turtle is one of six turtles in the genus Batagur. Once common and abundant in its habitat, it declined rapidly and was believed extinct until two subpopulations were rediscovered in 2001 in the Chindwin and Dokhtawady rivers. In the breeding season the male's green head turns bright chartreuse-yellow with bold black markings (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is herbivorous, feeding primarily on aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation. A captive female is estimated to first reproduce at a maximum age of 14 years, and a wild female is likely to mature at around 20. The Reptile Database lists Myanmar (the Irrawaddy and Salween systems) and queries China (Yunnan) (The Reptile Database; Wikipedia, general species account).
