The black bulbul, also known as the Himalayan or Asian black bulbul, is a bulbul 24–25cm long with a long tail and always rich orange-red legs and bill. It is the type species of its genus and is found primarily in the Himalayas. Subspecies vary mostly in the shade of the body plumage, from grey to black, and some occur in white-headed morphs (Wikipedia, general species account).

The sexes are similar, while young birds lack the crest, have whitish underparts with a grey breast band and a brown tint to the upperparts. They can be quite noisy, giving various loud cheeping calls. Two or three eggs form the usual clutch (Wikipedia, general species account).
