The black scoter, or American scoter, is a large sea duck 43–49cm long. The adult female averages about 980g and 45cm, and the adult male about 1,100g and 49cm. Together with the common scoter it forms a subgenus, and the two are sometimes considered one species (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds in the far north of North America, in Labrador and Newfoundland and around Hudson Bay. Nests are tightly packed and the birds tend to take off together, though they are less social in the breeding season. It nests later than most other North American ducks. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
