It is a stout-bodied, smooth-skinned, aquatic newt of the family Salamandridae, closely related to the spotless paddle-tail newt, and lives in streams. It is characterised by its long, paddle-shaped tail used for propulsion, and breeding males may develop bluish-white spots (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is an aggressive hunter and feeder, carnivorous, eating worms, insects and small fish. It is almost exclusively aquatic, though it will leave the water at times, and its breeding behaviour is unknown (Wikipedia, general species account).
