The brant, or brent goose, is a small goose with a short, stubby bill, measuring 55–66cm long with a 106–121cm wingspan and weighing 0.88–2.2kg. The head and neck are black with a small white patch on either side of the neck, the under-tail is pure white, and the tail is black and the shortest of any goose. The black form of one subspecies looks blackish-brown and white. A clutch is three to five creamy-white or pale olive eggs (Wikipedia, general species account).
There are three subspecies, all of which winter along temperate-zone sea coasts and breed on the high-Arctic tundra. One population of about 125,000 breeds in north-western Canada, Alaska and eastern Siberia and winters mostly on the west coast of North America, with some wintering in east Asia, mainly Japan, and also Korea and China (Wikipedia, general species account).
