The brown-eared bulbul is a medium-sized bulbul native to eastern Asia, about 28cm long, greyish-brown with brown cheeks (the 'brown ears') and a long tail. Flocks produce loud 'shreep' and 'weesp' calls throughout the year, and one author described the song as one of the most unattractive noises made by any bird (Wikipedia, general species account).
While it prefers forested areas, it readily adapts to urban and rural environments, and its noisy squeaking calls are a familiar sound in most areas of Japan. The female lays about five eggs. Most birds still move south in winter. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
