Brown fish owls are powerful reddish-brown owls with dark streaking, pale underparts, yellow eyes and prominent pointed ear tufts. Their distribution extends from parts of the Middle East through South and Southeast Asia into eastern Asia. Although they occupy habitats ranging from dry rocky landscapes to tropical forest, they remain closely associated with rivers, lakes or other water bodies that supply food and places for bathing. These mainly nocturnal owls hunt by watching from trees or rocks before skimming prey from the surface, and they may also wade into shallow water. Fish, frogs, crabs and crayfish are important foods, but reptiles, birds, rats and carrion may also be taken. Pairs breed during the dry season and use old nests or sheltered cavities among rocks or trees, normally producing one or two eggs. (Animal Diversity Web)
