Habitat
Open scrub, perching on tops of thorny bushes
Range
Breeds in temperate Asia; winters in tropical Asia
The brown shrike is a shrike found mainly in Asia, closely related to the red-backed and isabelline shrikes. Like most shrikes it has a black bandit mask through the eye and lives in open scrub, perching on the tops of thorny bushes in search of prey. Several populations form distinct subspecies that breed in temperate Asia and migrate to winter quarters in tropical Asia. It is sometimes a vagrant in Europe and North America (Wikipedia, general species account).
The genus name is Latin for butcher, and the word shrike comes from an Old English word for shriek.
