The brown wood-owl is a resident breeder in South Asia, also found in Indonesia, Taiwan and south China. It is medium-large, 45 to 57 cm, with uniformly dark brown upperparts with faint white spotting on the shoulders and buff underparts with brown streaking. The facial disc is brown or rufous with a white edge and no concentric barring, and the eyes are dark brown, with a white neckband. The sexes look alike (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is highly nocturnal and common in dense forest, and small birds that mob it while it roosts can give it away. Its call is a hoo hoo hoo HOO or a deep goke-goke-ga-LOOO, and the alarm call is a bark. There are 14 subspecies, some of which might be distinct species.
