It occurs in southern China and mainland Southeast Asia, inhabiting forested mountains, steep rocky or karst slopes and scrub, in some areas reaching approximately 4,500m. Chinese serows are secretive and generally solitary, sheltering in forest and feeding on young leaves and shoots. Mating is reported in September and October, followed by an approximately eight-month gestation and the birth of one young. (Ecology Asia; Chinese Wikipedia, general species account)
