The common greenshank is a subarctic wader breeding from northern Scotland eastwards across northern Europe and the Palearctic. It is migratory, wintering in Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Australasia, usually on fresh water. It breeds on dry ground near marshy areas, laying about four eggs in a ground scrape. Its plumage is brown in the breeding season and grey-brown in winter (Wikipedia, general species account).

Its closest relative is the greater yellowlegs, and it can look very like the marsh sandpiper when in water.
