The common hoopoe, or Eurasian hoopoe, is the most widespread hoopoe: a distinctive cinnamon bird with black and white wings, a tall erectile crest, a broad white band across a black tail and a long, narrow, down-curved bill. It is 25 to 32 cm long with a wingspan of 44 to 48 cm and weighs 46 to 89 g. Its call is a soft oop-oop-oop (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is native to Europe, Asia and Africa and migratory in the northern part of its range. Eight subspecies are recognised, and the African form has sometimes been treated as a separate species.
