The common redshank is a Eurasian wader in the sandpiper family and a widespread breeding bird across temperate Eurasia. In breeding plumage it is marbled brown, slightly lighter below; in winter it becomes lighter-toned and less patterned, rather plain greyish-brown above and whitish below. The spotted redshank, which breeds in the Arctic, has a longer bill and legs (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is a migratory species, wintering on coasts around the Mediterranean and on the Atlantic coast of Europe from Ireland and Great Britain southwards. A tagged redshank was seen in Tamil Nadu, India, in April 2021 (Wikipedia, general species account).
