The common toad is a stocky, short-legged amphibian with greyish-brown skin covered by wart-like projections. It belongs to a taxonomically complex group of closely related toads and occurs across most of Europe, western North Asia and a small part of northwestern Africa. The animal usually remains concealed during daylight and becomes active around dusk. (Wikipedia, general species account)
At night the toad hunts invertebrates, moving with a slow walk or a series of short hops. It spends winter in underground holes, cellars and similar shelters, sometimes gathering with other amphibians; a smaller number overwinter in flowing water. Adults return to water to reproduce, and juveniles generally require more than one year to reach sexual maturity, with the timing varying among regions and climates.
