The crab-eating mongoose is grey along the flanks and darker on the neck, underside and legs. A broad white stripe runs from each cheek toward the shoulder, while the short rounded ears, yellow eyes, bushy tail and partial webbing between the toes further distinguish it. Adults measure 47.7–55.8cm from head to body, with a 28–34cm tail, and weigh 1.1–2.5kg. (Wikipedia, crab-eating mongoose species account)
Its range extends from northeastern South Asia through mainland Southeast Asia to southern China and Taiwan. Chinese records include subtropical limestone forests in Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan. It is closely associated with streams, is considered a strong swimmer and usually hunts during morning and evening along banks and shallow water. Despite its name, it eats not only crabs but fish, snails, frogs, rodents, birds, reptiles and insects. (Wikipedia, crab-eating mongoose species account; Mammal Diversity Database)
