Yellow-margined box turtles are semi-aquatic turtles found in China, Taiwan and the southern Ryukyu Islands. Their highly domed shells are dark brown with pale yellow or reddish markings, while yellow stripes extend behind the eyes. They occupy evergreen forest, hilly grassland, rice fields, streams and rivers. Seasonal conditions influence habitat use, and individuals overwinter beneath logs, leaf litter, undergrowth or inside abandoned animal burrows. (Animal Diversity Web)
These turtles are omnivorous, eating snails, slugs, worms, berries and leaves. Females bury their eggs in soft, moist soil or sand but provide no care after nest construction. Several small clutches may be produced during one season. Activity is greatest from spring through autumn, with females generally moving more extensively than males. Vision and smell are well developed, while tactile signals are especially important during direct social interactions. (Animal Diversity Web)
