The Daurian ground squirrel is a small, unspotted ground squirrel measuring 16.5–27cm and weighing 165–265g. Its buff or greyish-russet coat becomes longer and softer in winter; a pale eye-ring and a dark band before the yellow-tipped tail are distinguishing features. It occurs widely in northeastern China and extends into Mongolia and Russia's Transbaikalia region. (Wikipedia, general species account)
It uses open grassland, steppe, cultivated ground and banks where burrows can be excavated. The squirrels are active by day and retreat underground for shelter, reproduction and seasonal dormancy. Plant matter forms most of the diet, although animal material may also be taken. (Wikipedia, general species account)
