The dwarf sperm whale is a compact toothed whale with a square head, small underslung jaw and a relatively tall curved dorsal fin. A pale marking behind the eye resembles a false gill. Adults are approximately 2–2.7m long, making this one of the smallest whales. It inhabits deep tropical and temperate offshore waters in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. (Wikipedia, general species account)

It feeds on squid, fish and crustaceans from deep water and is usually encountered alone or in small groups. When alarmed it can release a cloud of dark intestinal fluid before diving, a defensive behaviour analogous to the ink discharge of cephalopods. Its inconspicuous surfacing makes live sightings uncommon. (Wikipedia, general species account)
