The eastern barn owl is native to southeastern Asia, New Zealand and Australasia. It is often treated as a subspecies group of a cosmopolitan barn owl, though the International Ornithologists' Union separates it as its own species. It is nocturnal over most of its range and specialises in hunting on the ground, taking almost entirely small mammals that it locates by sound (Wikipedia, general species account).
It mates for life, and the clutch averages about four eggs, laid in a tree hollow, old building or cliff fissure. The female does all the incubating, and she and the chicks depend on the male for food.
