Montane forest with bamboo understory

The eastern or Chinese red panda is distinguished from the Himalayan red panda by a broader skull, stronger frontal arch, more conspicuous tail rings and a redder face with less white. Genomic evidence supports treating the two forms as separate phylogenetic species, although some authorities retain them as subspecies. Ailurus styani occupies northern Myanmar and southwestern China, especially Sichuan, Yunnan and southeastern Tibet, where it specializes on bamboo in montane forest.
