The Eurasian, or western, marsh harrier is a large harrier of temperate and subtropical western Eurasia and adjacent Africa, 48–56cm long with a wingspan of 115–130cm, males weighing 400–650g and females 550–800g. The male is mostly cryptic reddish-brown with lighter yellowish streaks, prominent on the breast, with a pale greyish-yellowish head and shoulders. A normal clutch is three to eight eggs (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is often divided into two subspecies, the widely migratory nominate form across most of its range and a resident form in north-west Africa. Related forms, including the eastern marsh harrier of eastern Asia, are now generally considered separate species. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
