The Eurasian otter is a streamlined semiaquatic mustelid adapted to swimming and underwater hunting. Although the opened account supplied few external measurements, it records an average mass of approximately 6.75 kg. Sensitive facial whiskers detect movements made by fish and other prey beneath the surface. On land, individuals use covered dens and dry resting places among banks, roots, earth tunnels, boulder piles, shrubs, and caves. (Animal Diversity Web)
Eurasian otters inhabit rivers, streams, lakes, swamps, rice fields, fjords, and ocean shores across much of Eurasia south of the tundra and parts of North Africa. Mainly solitary and most active at dusk or night, they eat fish, crustaceans, mollusks, amphibians, birds, eggs, insects, worms, and small mammals. Females usually bear two or three cubs after 60–70 days. (Animal Diversity Web)
