The Eurasian wigeon is a common, widespread dabbling duck of the Palearctic, breeding in the far north of Europe and Asia. It is 42 to 52 cm long with a wingspan of 71 to 80 cm and weighs 500 to 1,073 g. The breeding male has grey flanks and back, a black rear end, a dark green speculum, a white wing patch, a pink breast, a white belly and a chestnut head with a creamy crown (Wikipedia, general species account).
In eclipse plumage the drake looks more like the light-brown female, which comes in a redder and a greyer form. It is one of three living wigeon in the genus Mareca.
