The Eurasian woodcock is a medium-small wading bird of temperate and subarctic Eurasia, 33–38cm long including a straight bill of 6–8cm, with a wingspan of 55–65cm. It has cryptic camouflage suited to its woodland habitat, intricately patterned reddish-brown upperparts and buff underparts, and the legs vary from grey to pinkish (Wikipedia, general species account).
About a third of the world's Eurasian woodcock breed in Europe, more than 90% of them in Russia and Fennoscandia, with a range stretching from Fennoscandia to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands and from western Europe to Russia. Northern and Asian populations migrate to southern Europe and the Indian subcontinent respectively. The eggs measure 44 × 34mm and weigh 26.5g (Wikipedia, general species account).
