The European free-tailed bat is a large, long-winged bat whose tail projects conspicuously beyond the tail membrane. It has broad forward-facing ears and grey-brown fur. The species ranges from southern Europe and North Africa across much of Asia. (Wikipedia, general species account)

It roosts in high cliff fissures, rock crevices and buildings and often launches directly into open air. Long narrow wings support very fast flight at considerable height, where moths, beetles and other insects are intercepted. Its powerful echolocation calls can sometimes be audible to people.
