Fea's muntjac, also called the Tenasserim muntjac, is a medium-sized muntjac measuring approximately 100–104cm long and weighing 18–21kg. Like other muntjacs, it has an arched back, elongated facial glands and slender antler pedicles in the male. Its known wild distribution is centered on the Tenasserim Mountains and adjoining forested regions of southern Myanmar and western Thailand. Genetic research confirms that it is a distinct lineage within Muntiacus. (Wikipedia, general species account; Muntiacus feae mitogenome study)
The species inhabits upland evergreen, mixed and shrub forest, with reports extending to approximately 2,500m. It is described as solitary and principally active during daylight, feeding on grasses, low-growing leaves and tender shoots. Females conceal newborn young in dense vegetation until they are capable of following their mother. Reliable field information remains sparse, and some historical specimens attributed to this species require re-examination. The opened sources did not confirm a wild Chinese population.
