Spatula querquedula
Habitat
Shallow marshes and grassland; wet ground in winter
Range
Breeds in Europe and the Palearctic; winters in Africa, India, Bangladesh and Australasia
The garganey is a small dabbling duck that breeds across much of Europe and the Palearctic and is strictly migratory, with the whole population moving in the northern winter to Africa, India, Bangladesh and Australasia, where large flocks can occur. Its breeding habitat is grassland next to shallow marshes and steppe lakes. Like other small ducks such as the Eurasian teal, it springs easily from the water with a fast, twisting flight (Wikipedia, general species account).
Linnaeus described it in 1758. It was moved to the genus Spatula after a 2009 molecular study.
