The golden coin turtle, also known as the Chinese three-banded or three-striped box turtle, is native to southern China and has two recognised subspecies. It grows to a straight-line carapace length of 25cm, and the plastron is mostly black with a yellow border (Wikipedia, general species account).

Its sex is determined by incubation temperature, and because incubation temperatures on farms in warm lowlands have only produced females, farms have struggled to produce males. In Hong Kong it feeds mainly on fishes, frogs and carrion, and remains of crabs, snails and insects have also been found in its droppings. The Reptile Database gives Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and Hong Kong (The Reptile Database; Wikipedia, general species account).
