The grey-headed lapwing breeds in north-east China and Japan; the Japanese population winters at least partly in southern Honshu, and the mainland population winters in northern South-east Asia from north-eastern India to Cambodia. It is 34–37cm long, with a grey head and neck, a darker grey breast band, a white belly, a brown back, a white rump and a black tail. In flight it is striking, with black primaries and white underwings and upper-wing secondaries (Wikipedia, general species account).
Young birds have the white plumage tinged with grey, a less distinct breast band and pale fringes on the upperparts and wing coverts. The call is a sharp chee-it. It nests from April to July in wet grassland, rice fields and marshland edges, and feeds in shallow water (Wikipedia, general species account).
