The great evening bat is the largest vesper bat and is notable for the exceptionally short scientific name Ia io. It has dark brown fur, a broad head and long wings. The species occurs in southern China and scattered parts of South and Southeast Asia, frequently roosting in limestone caves. (Wikipedia, general species account)

It hunts large insects in open air and also captures migrating birds, a diet confirmed through prey remains and molecular studies. Powerful flight allows it to forage above montane forest and cross open spaces around cave systems. (Wikipedia, general species account; Thabah et al. 2007)
