Rostratula benghalensis
Habitat
Swamps and edges of lakes and rivers
Range
Africa and southern Asia
Size
23-28cm
The greater painted-snipe is a medium-sized wader, 23 to 28 cm long, widely distributed across Africa and southern Asia in swamps and the edges of larger water bodies such as lakes and rivers. The sexes differ in an unusual way: the female is larger, heavier and more boldly coloured than the male. The female is normally polyandrous, and the male incubates the eggs and cares for the young (Wikipedia, general species account).
The Australian painted-snipe was formerly treated as a subspecies but is now a separate species on the basis of differences in form and calls.
