Motacilla cinerea
Habitat
Running water when breeding; lakes, coasts and other watery habitats otherwise
Range
Breeds in Eurosiberia; migrates to tropical Asia and Africa
Size
18-19cm
The grey wagtail is a wagtail about 18 to 19 cm long. It looks somewhat like the yellow wagtail but has the yellow on its underside restricted to the throat and vent, and breeding males have a black throat. It is widely distributed, with several populations breeding in Eurosiberia and migrating to tropical regions of Asia and Africa (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is always associated with running water when breeding, though it may nest on man-made structures near streams, and outside the breeding season it may also be seen around lakes, coasts and other watery habitats. Like other wagtails it wags its tail often, flies low in undulations and gives a sharp call, often in flight. Three subspecies are recognised.
