Forests and mountain ranges; breeds in tree cavities
Range
Himalayas, Taiwan and Korea
The Himalayan owl, or Himalayan wood owl, is a medium-sized owl native to the forests and mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Taiwan and Korea. It is nocturnal and rarely seen in most of its range. It has warm-toned, tawny plumage with light brown, dark brown and white colouring, a light brown and white chest with vertical dark brown stripes, and darker wings and tail with white horizontal bands (Wikipedia, general species account).
Few studies have been done on its lifestyle and population trends. Tree cavities are preferred breeding sites and are vital for reproduction. The first of its three subspecies to be described, originally called the Bengal tawny owl, was named by the English zoologist Edward Blyth in 1845 (Wikipedia, general species account).
