The hooded crane is native to East Asia and is a frequent migratory bird in South Korea and Japan. It is one of the smallest cranes but still a fairly large bird, about 1m long, weighing about 3.7kg, with a wingspan of 1.87m. The top of the neck and head is white, except for a patch of bare red skin above the eye (Wikipedia, general species account).

It breeds in south-central and south-eastern Siberia, and breeding is also suspected in Mongolia. In 2012 one was seen in southern Indiana, USA, a bird that may have followed sandhill cranes across the Pacific (Wikipedia, general species account).
