The western hooded pitta is a green bird with a black head and chestnut crown, 16–19cm long and 42–70g. It was formerly considered the same species as the Nicobar, Minahasa, eastern and Biak hooded pittas (Wikipedia, general species account).
It forages on the ground for insects and their larvae and also eats berries. It breeds between February and August, the pair being strongly territorial and building the nest on the ground, and both parents incubate and care for the fledglings. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
