The Japanese night heron is a night heron of East Asia that breeds in Japan and winters in the Philippines and Indonesia. The wingspan is 43–47cm. In adults the head and neck feathers are russet and the wing feathers dark brown, and juveniles differ in colour. It prefers dense, damp forest in both its breeding and winter ranges (Wikipedia, general species account).

Three to five eggs are laid per breeding season and incubated for 17–20 days, mostly by a bird alone, rarely close to another heron. Incubation starts with each egg as it is laid, so the chicks hatch on different days. Documented threats include the introduction of the Siberian weasel in its breeding range and nest predation by crows. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
