Caprimulgus indicus
Habitat
Forest edges
Range
Indian subcontinent
Size
21-24cm
The jungle nightjar is found mainly on the edge of forests in the Indian subcontinent, seen or heard at dusk. It is mostly grey with black streaks on the crown and a greyish tail with narrow black bars. The male has a white throat patch broken in the middle; the female's is rufous (Wikipedia, general species account).
The usual call is a series of thacoo or chuck notes, like a distant engine, and the song is a slow, regular series of notes that can go on for ten seconds. The East Asian grey nightjar was split from it.
