Rhizomys sumatrensis
Diet
Bamboo shoots, roots and other underground plant parts; also cultivated tapioca and sugarcane
Habitat
Bamboo-rich habitats
Range
Southern China and mainland Southeast Asia
The large bamboo rat is substantially larger than other members of its genus and has a relatively long tail. A dark triangular patch on the crown helps distinguish it. It feeds chiefly on bamboo shoots, roots and other underground plant parts, but also takes cultivated tapioca and sugarcane. Its extensive burrowing can aerate the soil.
