Southern Himalayan foothills, eastern South Asia, South-east Asia and northern Australia

Clutch size

1–2 eggs

Size

31.5–33cm

The large-tailed nightjar is known for its long, broad tail and cryptic plumage that blends into its surroundings. It measures about 31.5–33cm. Males have a pale crown with a dark median stripe. It is found along the southern Himalayan foothills, in eastern South Asia, South-east Asia and northern Australia, in subtropical or tropical moist lowland, mangrove and moist montane forest (Wikipedia, general species account).

The female builds no nest, laying one or two eggs in a shallow depression in leaf litter on the ground, and chicks, which hatch downy, may be moved from the nest site one to two days after hatching. Its camouflage and nocturnal lifestyle make it hard to study; songs can be heard year-round, though vocal activity varies with breeding, density and moon phase, and little is known of its nesting and roosting behaviour (Wikipedia, general species account).
